This twin-murder case is hitting too many dead ends.

Will the truth ever be known?

Isn't it one of India's biggest unsolved mysteries?

Did the investigating agency CBI commit mistakes or there is a cover-up?

Think, Discuss, Share. And Please Do It In Public.

    LOOK WHAT THEY SAY -

    ■ Vir Sanghvi: In any other country, the cops who screwed up the Aarushi case would be in jail. In India, they get promotions and transfers.

    ■ Barkha Dutt: Will Aarushi Talwar's murder ever be solved. I dont think so. Strange that the phone should turn up after a year suddenly, just like that.

    ■ Times of India, 15.9.2009: Headway at last: Aarushi's cellphone found in UP town.

  • The Hullabaloo

Exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama is amazing. He is a nomad. US President Barack Obama will not meet him, Indians are wary of him, Chinese hate him. Yet he always smiles!

Meanwhile, after attacking India for permitting the Dalai Lama to tour Arunachal, Beijing now attacks the Tibetan leader for hurting Sino-Indian ties!

And as he prepared to visit Arunachal Pradesh, China's official media Friday launched another attack on the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, calling him a "lair" accusing him of aiming to split China and disrupt the development of Tibet.

Criticising as "nonsense," the Dalai Lama's reported statement that "there exists fear in Tibet," the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party, said it only showed that the Tibetan "spiritual" leader was pursuing a hidden agenda to split China.

"This nonsense only reveals the hollowness and self-deceiving gimmicks deep inside the lama's heart. As an economically thriving Tibet had drawn increasing attention from the world, the Dalai Lama could only see his hidden scheme to disrupt China's unity gradually falling apart," it said.

The Dalai Lama, currently in Japan, is scheduled to visit Tawang monastery in Arunachal Pradesh on November 8 on what he has said is a spiritual, and not political, trip.

"There exists fear in Tibet", the nonsense shows the Dalai Lama is still telling lies. The Dalai Lama hates to see a unified and harmonious new Tibet. During the past 50 years, great changes have taken place in Tibet, and people are now enjoying rising amenities," it said.

A handy resource on the events surrounding China’s invasion of Tibet

DalaiSince the time of Kang Hsi, every Chinese schoolboy has been taught to look on Tibet as a province of China … Nehru is reported as saying that no one questioned the legality of the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950 … The Chinese are already, with the coming of spring, pouring in fresh troops from east and north and restricting movements in areas under their control … The widespread demonstrations against Chinese rule began peacefully, but evidently are not so now … Interesting Reading. Michelle Obama’s Secrets to Finding a Great Guy

cover-glamourWhen it comes to landing a top-notch guy – say, the future president of the United States – Michelle Obama is one of the few women out there with experience. And she’s letting other women in on the secret.

“Cute’s good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it’s, ‘Who are you as a person?’ ” Obama, 45, says in the December issue of Glamour, out Nov. 10. “Don’t look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul. When you’re dating a man, you should always feel good. … You shouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody who doesn’t make you completely happy and make you feel whole.”

Also important, according to the pop-culture-loving First Lady, who’s been married to President Barack Obama since 1992: Getting your priorities straight.

“I have always tried to put my kids first, and then put myself a really close second, as opposed to fifth or seventh,” she says. “One thing that I’ve learned from male role models is that they don’t hesitate to invest in themselves.”

Chinese police rescue 2,000 kidnapped children

More than 2,000 Chinese children have been rescued by police in a six-month campaign against human trafficking.

The police have found 2,008 children, some just a few months old, who were kidnapped by human traffickers since the campaign was launched in April. Hundreds of arrests have also been made and 42 suspects were detained last week for allegedly selling 52 children in the north of China.

Thousands of children go missing each year in China. Male children are more highly-prized, thanks in part to the one-child policy, and there is a thriving market in young boys, who can sell for as much as 40,000 yuan (£3,600). Read more here.

Man tries to smuggle 14 pythons into Norway by taping them to his body

snake smuiggling

A man taped 14 royal pythons and 10 albino leopard geckos to his body in an attempt to smuggle the reptiles into Norway. The 22-year-old Norwegian was stopped in a routine check by Kristiansand customs after arriving on a ferry from Denmark. After finding a tarantula in the man’s bag, customs officials decided to give him a full body search that revealed 14 stockings – one for each snake – taped around his torso. Read full story here.

Saudi journalist sentenced to 60 lashes

A man's sexual boasts on a TV show caused an uproar in Saudi Arabia, where Shariah, or Islamic law, is practiced.

A Saudi court has sentenced a female journalist to 60 lashes for her work on a controversial Arabic-language TV show that aired an episode in which a man bragged about his sex life.

The court in Jeddah also imposed a two-year travel ban on Rosanna Al-Yami, according to a Saudi Information Ministry official, who could not be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media. The ban prevents her from travelling outside Saudi Arabia.

This official identified Al-Yami as a fixer, who helps journalists obtain stories, and a coordinator for Lebanese Broadcasting Corp., the network that aired “A Thick Red Line,” a popular show on social taboos.

On one episode, a Saudi man, Mazen Abdul Jawad, bragged about sex and got into trouble with Saudi authorities for his boasts. Abdul Jawad was put on trial and sentenced to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes. Read more here.

Pope’s Offer Raises Idea of Marriage for Catholic Priests

popeIn making it easier for traditionalist Anglicans to become Catholic, Pope Benedict XVI once again revealed the character of his papacy: to reach out to the most fervent of like-minded believers, even if they are not Catholic. Yet some observers wonder whether his move could paradoxically liberalize the church — or at least wedge it open — on a crucial issue: celibacy.

In a momentous move, the Vatican has said it would help Anglicans uncomfortable with female priests and openly gay bishops join a new Anglican rite within the Catholic Church.

The invitation also extends to married Anglican clergy. And so some have begun to wonder, even if the 82-year-old Benedict himself would never allow it, would more people in the Roman Catholic Church begin to entertain the possibility of married Catholic priests? Read more here.

In accident, PF scam probe takes another hit

The death of Ashutosh Asthana, a key accused in the Ghaziabad Provident Fund scam, in an accident comes as yet another blow in a case that has been crawling since it first broke nearly two years ago.

justiceThe trial in the case is yet to begin, or the chargesheet filed. Till September 9, the CBI had filed four status reports, and claimed to have concluded the preliminary investigation. Attorney General G E Vahanvati had told the apex court on the last date of hearing that the agency was awaiting the report of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory that is examining 21,000 documents and 6,000 specimen signatures.

It was Asthana who spilled the beans in the Rs 7-crore scam in the Ghaziabad district courts, allegedly involving 34 judges, including a sitting Supreme Court judge and 11 others from the Allahabad and Uttarakhand high courts. He was the only person who recorded his statement before a magistrate and detailed the manner in which the money was siphoned off. He also named the judicial officers he delivered expensive gifts to. Leech convicts Australian robber

leechAustralian Police in Tasmania have used a blood sample from a leech to identify a criminal, in what is believed to be a world forensic first.

Eight years ago, a group of thieves robbed a 71-year-old woman in her home.

The leech sucked blood from one of the assailants, Peter Alec Cannon, and was later picked up at the crime scene by the police.

The DNA was stored on a database. When Cannon was charged on a drug offense last year, the sample matched up. Read more here.

Mothers-in-law campaign for protection

iPod nano advt.

In a campaign against “abuse of laws favouring daughters-in-law”, about 50 mothers-in-law have launched a group to stay united and fight for their rights. ”There are a number of laws to protect daughters-in-law in India, but there is none to protect us,” said Neena Dhulia, coordinator of the newly-launched All India Mother-in-Law Protection Forum. The group has been formed in Bangalore. “Our primary aim is to raise awareness in society about the state of mothers-in-law,” she said.

Dhulia regretted that Indian films and soap operas too portrayed mothers-in-law mostly as vamps. “The stereotyping of mothers-in-law as evil and blood thirsty by media and popular culture. This violates the civil liberties and the constitutional provisions of right to liberty and right to life,” the group said in its launch statement.

I am a cricketer, not a terrorist: Parvez Rasool

When Jammu & Kashmir batsman Parvez Rasool walked up to the middle at the fall of the second wicket in their C.K. Nayudu U-22 tie against Karnataka, the youngster was visibly overwhelmed by a sea of emotions. Surely, cricket alone wasn’t on his mind. As he went on to admit later, “I had to prove that I am a cricketer and not a terrorist which I had to show with my bat.”

Parvez Rasool
Parvez Rasool

The budding batsman from J&K was in the news for all the wrong reasons on a fateful Saturday mid-Oct. after he was detained by Karnataka police for several hours after his kit bag allegedly showed traces of explosives. The incident received nationwide attention even as a Champions League match scheduled at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium got delayed by a couple of hours due to security reasons.

Even before he could recover from the shock, Rasool had on hand another crucial job – to hold his team together in a tough contest at the very same venue, the M Chinnaswamy stadium, where the drama had panned out last week.

“I could hardly sleep on the first night after the incident. I couldn’t believe something like this had happened in my life. I had even thought of quitting the game. But once I started knocking the balls in the nets, I felt better and I decided to play this game,” explained Rasool. Read more here.
