Serena On The Line

serena williams bwOne of the biggest stars in tennis, Serena Williams is busy these days with practice because she’s preparing for the US Open and the release of her book, “On The Line.” The release date for the book is September 1, 2009. The publicity for ‘On The Line’ is starting to kick into place.

Serena has captured every major title. Her 2009 Australia Open championship earned her the #1 world ranking for the third time in her illustrious career – and marked only the latest exclamation point on a life well and purposefully lived.

As a young girl, Serena began training with an adult-sized racquet that was almost as big as her. Rather than dropping the racquet, Serena saw it as a challenge to overcome-and she has confronted every obstacle on her path to success with the same unflagging spirit.

serena williams bookFrom growing up in the tough, hardscrabble neighbourhood of Compton, California, to being trained by her father on public tennis courts littered with broken glass and drug paraphernalia, to becoming the top women’s player in the world, Serena has proven to be an inspiration to her legions of fans both young and old.

Her accomplishments have not been without struggle: being derailed by injury, devastated by the tragic shooting of her older sister, and criticized for her unorthodox approach to tennis.

Yet somehow, Serena always manages to prevail. Both on the court and off, she’s applied the strength and determination that helped her to become a champion to successful pursuits in philanthropy, fashion, television and film. In this compelling and poignant memoir, Serena takes an empowering look at her extraordinary life and what is still to come.

  2. Serena Opens Title Defence At The Open

Serena Williams has kicked started her quest for a fourth US Open crown and the second in a row with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alexa Glatch. The match was played on Arthur Ashe Stadium in conditions that fluctuated between cloud and some sun.

Certainly Glatch played alright in the first set but the end result was never in doubt although many of the points she won were on errors from Serena. However when the second set rolled around Serena had eliminated those loose points and it was all systems go.

Serena wasn’t thrilled with the way she played, she was nervous; after all it is a Grand Slam. Even though she’s a perfectionist the idea is not to play your best tennis in the first round. If things had become tight she would have lifted her own play to counteract that. These are the events Serena plays for and she lifts her level for these moments.

This was the second meeting between them – Serena won in Miami earlier this year. Glatch said she was a bit surprised when the draw came out but then decided this was moment to be treated positively – playing one of the greats of the game and having the experience of being on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The conditions were a little bit breezy on the court and the ball was floating slightly but Serena was stepping into it and really striking it. Glatch was a bit overwhelmed and said “she can probably hit bigger than any other girl on the tour”.

This year’s US Open makes it ten years since she won the title for the first time. The time has really flown by.

“Ten years ago I definitely wasn’t a favourite” Serena said. “I felt like so like I had nothing to lose, and that’s kind of how – I like that attitude. When you play with that attitude, then you can go a really far way. That’s kind of how I would like to even approach it this year.”

But for Serena the main topic of conversation in her post-match media conference was her new autobiography released by Grand Central Publishing. It gets it official release on September 1. She was asked if she was writing about the US Open women’s draw, what her lead line be.

“Oh what would my lead be?” she asked thoughtfully. “Well, Serena’s back where she belongs.”

  3. I hope that all is well with you. I am pleased to announce that my book, “On The Line” will be in stores September 1, 2009.

There are defining moments in my life that I discuss in my book. Of course, “On The Line” is one of my highlighted defining moments. It is concrete, something that I can not take back & it is a gift to my fans.

There have been many questions asked by the media, fans, & other tennis players. I have not addressed every question in the past but with this book, I hope to satisfy some of the curiosity that lingers.

I hope that you enjoy my words; the pictures are a timeline of my history & the stories of my childhood.

As you know, I am the baby sister, so I discuss my childhood & some of my famous moments in my household before I become “Serena Williams the International Tennis Player.” Yes, I was born to “play.” LOL!!! As a child, in a house full of women, I have no clue how my dad survived but he did, we all lived, loved & made it work. I am dedicated to the love of my Dad, Mom, Yetunde, Isha, Lyn, & Vee for dealing with me on & off the court all of my life. I hope that you all are able to feel the love that I felt as a child through my words.

My family & I are still very close. Just think, there isn’t a match that I play where I don’t have at least one family member. “On The Line” will be released on September 1, 2009 during the US OPEN.

Thank you for all the support!
