Hollywood, Bollywood & Now Pollywood Too

Pollywood? Which film city is this! No, this is not inspired by Hollywood or Bollywood. Just a passing remark by BJP leader Pramod Mahajan that politicians too be glamourised à la film personalities, impressed journalist Vijay Kumar Madhu so much so that he went on to publish a newspaper. And he named it Pollywood.

Hailing  from Jammu, Madhu then got the newspaper registered with the Registrar of Newspapers in India as English daily from New Delhi. Madhu ensures I get a copy of Pollywood, though the publication faces occasional interruptions for paucity of funds. Nevertheless his eight-page newspaper mostly features eminent politicians, ek dum hero maapik. Plus, special occasions in the lives of these politicians are treated equally, specially.

Madhu, 57, also runs a news agency ‘Kaalnetra Parikrama’, duly accredited with the Press Information Bureau which he runs with his long experience, gathered while working with several other newspapers and magazines in the past.

Pollywood claims circulations in Karnataka, Haryana, Himachal, J&K, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim, UP, Uttarakhand and North-East too. But that is for you to check up.

And Mr. Madhu, YES… there indeed is a popular term — Pollywood — for the film industry based in Pakistan’s Peshawar city. That Pollywood produces Pashto language films. Some movies are also produced in Urdu and some are a mix up of Pashto and Urdu. Is that news to you?
